I used to be quite fit as a teenager but haven’t kept as active as I would like as I have gotten older. At age 62, I now have three grandchildren that I help look after a few days a week and I have realised that keeping up my fitness will help me run around after them and give me more energy for playtime.

Earlier this year, some of us started a 12-week healthy eating cooking course to help lose weight. To start with we got weighed and had our blood pressure checked and there were different speakers including a doctor who came to talk to us about healthy lifestyles.

As part of the course, we started going to a Women’s Fitness class on a Wednesday at Havelock Community Centre. We started to speak to our neighbours about it and more of us are now going along. Even though the course has long finished; we’re still going to the fitness classes.

I only miss it if I am away or when my back is bad but I intend to carry on. It did me good! It made me think about wanting to try other forms of exercise. Sometimes I have found it difficult to discover information on different classes and exercises but I now want to try something for older women, so I have been having a look online and found some to try. I would encourage other women to get out there and give group exercise a go. It makes it easier when you are all doing it together.

Overall it is the social occasion I’ve enjoyed; meeting different people. And we’ve certainly had a laugh!
